Preventing Children’s Toothaches and Promoting Good Hygiene

The dental health of kids is a cause close to our hearts. It’s really tough for us to see kids in pain because of their teeth, and we want to prevent this. Our dental ethos revolves around prevention, so an early start of good dental hygiene is one of our advocacies.

You might have heard about our hygienist Laura going around schools in Richmond to teach children about oral hygiene and healthy eating. But we’d also like to reach out to you to share with you some essentials for children’s oral health.

Daily At-home Oral Care Goes a Long Way

For babies, you can start brushing their teeth when their milk tooth breaks through, and this usually happens at around six months. You can use a smear of toothpaste for children aged one to two, and a pea-sized blob when they turn three. You can brush their teeth for them while they are still young. When their motor skills become more developed, you can demonstrate to them how to brush their teeth in front of the mirror.

When your children get older, you can supervise how they brush their teeth until they turn seven or eight. You can also remind them to brush their teeth at least twice a day especially after meals and before bedtime.

Dental Visits do not have to be Scary

You can bring your baby to us when their milk teeth appear. Being familiar with our dentists and our clinic can help children become accustomed to dentist visits. Our assessments are thorough and painless. We also make sure that your children will be in an environment which is as stress-free as possible. This can lessen the possibility of them developing fears of dental treatments or can abate their fears when they realise there is nothing of which to be afraid.

Knowing the Whats, Hows, and Whys can Reinforce Good Dental Practice

We conduct ‘Stay Ahead’ sessions to discuss to both parents and children the essentials in keeping a mouth healthy, including a proper diet. We also teach children about plaque and how to brush teeth properly. We teach them the correct brushing technique, the amount of time needed and how to cover all areas so as to remove as much plaque as possible.

In the Stay Ahead session, we can advise you on the toothpaste appropriate for different ages. We also promote a good diet with oral health so we can go through a diet plan.

Personalised Monitoring Can Give Children Sense of Achievement

We have a fun way of monitoring oral health that gives children an exciting challenge. With us, your child will have a chart showing how clean his or her mouth is. The challenge is if we will see improvements in the next months.

As your caring dentists in Richmond, we would love to talk to you more about your family’s oral health. Get in touch with us today for any inquiries. We have no obligation consultations, and we will only continue when you fully understand your options and have agreed to take our recommended course of action.
